Macbook Nano
Note: I don't have a Wind anymore (too small for my hands), so some of this info is out of date (mainly the audio switching script, and lack of a BootCD).
This guide shows you how to install Retail Leopard on an MSI Wind netbook using the BOOT-132 method.
Download the package here (54mb)
Installation Instructions:
Pre-flight:
- Install Leopard
- Install Pre-flight package (kexts, boot timeout, PC EFI v9, and Time Machine Fix)
The easiest way is to plug the 2.5" SATA drive into an existing Mac and install Leopard from the Desktop. Then use Uinstaller to install the Pre-flight package with the selected options to that drive. When finished, eject and physically install into the Wind. If you don't have access to a Mac, you can use a BootCD (not included in my package) and a USB CD-ROM drive to install Leopard. Note that if you use the disc-based method, you do not need to install the Pre-flight package or delete Disabler.kext from the Extensions folder, since it is not installed. You will need a USB Keyboard and USB Mouse for the initial setup!
Post-flight:
- Boot with -f and setup Leopard (you'll need a USB keyboard & mouse for the initial setup)
- Install 10.5.6 Combo Update (668mb) - DO NOT REBOOT!!!
- Install Post-flight package (kexts, boot timeout, PC EFI v9, Time Machine Fix, EFI String for Intel GMA950)
- Delete AppleIntelCPUPowerManagement.kext & Disabler.kext from /System/Library/Extensions
- Delete Trackpad.prefPane from /System/Library/PreferencePanes and install the new one
- Copy "About This Mac Modifier" to the Desktop, run it, and change the CPU name to "1.6 GHz Atom" (may crash on first run, so run twice if needed)
- Install CHUD
- Copy switch.sh to the Desktop
- Reboot (click on the Reboot button in the 10.5.6 Combo Update)
- Download all remaining updates and reboot; repeat until none are left
- Disable automatic software update in System Preferences
Notes:
- Audio via Onboard Speakers and Headphones work, but the solution isn't very elegent. Right-click on the switch.sh file, Open With > Other... > Utilities folder (Enable: All Applications) > Terminal, type in your password, and it will switch between the speakers and the headphone jack. You can build an Automator Workflow, use QuickSilver, and do a variety of other methods to automate the process.
- This kit does not contain the leaked Realtek OS X driver for stock wifi. I used a Dell 802.11n Wifi card, which works without aftermarket drives.
- I no longer have the Wind (sold it, a bit too small for my fingers), so I can't do any more development work on my end.
- Everything works - Restart, Cold Boot, Shutdown, Sleep, Display Sleep, GMA950 with CI/QE, basic power management, Bluetooth, Ethernet, and so on. The GMA950 driver has occasional artifacts.
- For more resources and discussion, check out the MSI Wind OS X forums.
- Make sure your networking hardware is enabled. Press Fn + F11 to toggle it. It has 4 modes: off, wifi, bluetooth, and wifi/bluetooth. There are LED status lights on the lower right-hand side of the wristpad on the laptop to indicate which mode the hardware is in. Bluetooth turns blue when enabled and Wifi (the icon that looks like a phone when a dotted line through it) turns green.
